Transfer registration number to the name of a company

Go to a vehicle registration counter or an RDW location: a desk in Veendam or Zoetermeer or an inspection station. You do not need to make an appointment. Please bring the following:

• The registration card and a complete registration code. Or the Certificate of Registered Ownership and Transfer Certificate.
• Valid Dutch driving licence. Alternatively, visit an RDW location with a valid ID, passport or any other valid ID (only available in Dutch).
• A digitally certified Chamber of Commerce extract, a paper certified extract or a copy thereof. The extract states the name of the authorised signatory and is no more than one year old. Please email the digitally certified extract to us. You will receive the email address at the counter or inspection station. We do not accept printouts from the internet that you have printed yourself.
• Are you arranging the transfer for someone else and are you not authorised to sign? You will need a copy of the ID and an authorisation (only available in Dutch) from the authorised signatory.

This is how it works

1. Take all the documentation to a counter, desk or inspection station. You do not need to make an appointment. At some counters, transfers can also be made on Sundays and in the evenings.
2. You will receive 2 documents:
   • Part 1 of the registration code. It can usually be found on the registration report. Tip: copy the code onto, for example, the letter with part 2 that you will receive later. This will prevent you from losing part of the code.
   • Certificate of indemnification. You will pass it on to the seller. This is proof that the vehicle is no longer registered in the seller's name.
3. The vehicle must be registered in your company's name. You are allowed to drive the vehicle, even if you are yet to receive your registration card. You must carry it after 14 days.
4. You are now responsible for things such as insurance, PTI and taxes.
5. If the vehicle is registered in your company's name, you are responsible for all obligations. Learn more at What to take care of.

We will send the registration card and part 2 of the registration code by mail. We can only mail these to an address in the Netherlands. If you have a leased vehicle, the leasing company will receive the registration code. You will receive the registration card either from them or from us. When you will receive it depends on the postal service.

You are allowed to drive the vehicle immediately, even if you do not yet have the registration card. You must carry it after 14 days. Please note that you have to carry the registration certificate at all times when abroad. Do you need the registration certificate on shorter notice? Registration certificate not received

If you have not received anything within 5 business days after we have sent the registration certificate and the registration code, please notify us within 3 months using the form Document not received. We will send you the registration certificate in response. The form must be completed by the registered owner/holder.

Certificate of Conformity

Have you transferred ownership of a heavy commercial vehicle, bus or trailer weighing more than 3,500 kg? We will send you a Certificate of Conformity one day after the registration certificate. When you will receive it depends on the postal service.

You are allowed to transfer a vehicle with an expired PTI. However, it is recommended to have the vehicle inspected first in order to avoid a fine.

Was the vehicle suspended? The suspension will lapse after the transfer. The new owner can suspend the vehicle themselves.

The transfer fee is the same everywhere. It does not matter whether you arrange the transfer with us or at a vehicle registration counter. Are you signing in with eHerkenning? You will pay with iDeal. Will you use a certificate? Your payment will be made using the method agreed with us.

If you have a vehicle registered in your (company) name, this entails a number of obligations for most vehicles. These obligations are:

Third-party liability insurance (WA)

Vehicles subject to compulsory insurance must be covered by third-party liability insurance (WA) from the moment they are registered in your name (in accordance with the Dutch Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Act (WAM)). You can purchase third-party liability insurance from most Dutch insurance companies. You will need a so-called reporting code. This code consists of the last 4 digits of the vehicle identification number (VIN) and can also be found on the vehicle registration card.

PTI

A vehicle subject to the PTI obligation must be PTI approved (Periodic Technical Inspection). More on PTI.

Motor vehicle tax

Are you registering a vehicle that is subject to motor vehicle tax in your name? This also serves as your declaration for motor vehicle tax (MRB). The Tax and Customs Administration will automatically send you a bill for this tax. More information about motor vehicle tax.
Do you have a classic car? You may not have to pay any motor vehicle tax, or you may have to pay less. The classic car must remain insured and have a valid PTI certificate. More information about the classic car scheme.

Suspension of obligations

You may temporarily suspend the obligations associated with owning a vehicle. You can do this by suspending the vehicle. The vehicle may no longer be parked or driven on public roads.  

Fines after verification of details

We check the insurance register and the inspection register daily. This allows us to immediately see whether a vehicle is insured and has passed its PTI inspection. We check every vehicle to which these obligations apply at least once a year in both registers (100 percent check). We do this on behalf of the Ministry of Justice and Security.

Is your vehicle not insured? You will receive a fine from the Central Judicial Collection Agency (CJIB).
If your vehicle has not passed its mandatory PTI inspection, you will receive a fine from the CJIB.

The Tax and Customs Administration determines whether you have an obligation to pay motor vehicle tax for your vehicle by checking the vehicle registration database. If you fail to pay (on time), you will receive a fine from the Tax and Customs Administration.
