Renewing your driving licence online
Is your driving licence about to expire, or do you want to add a category to your licence? You can usually arrange the renewal or addition online with us. If you do not wish to renew online, or are unable to do so, please go to your local municipality.
The date on your new driving licence will be the date on which you submitted your application. Example: your driving licence is valid for 10 years and expires on 14 September 2028. You renew the driving licence on 21 July 2028. Your new driving licence will expire on 21 July 2038.
Conditions for online renewal
- You have a Dutch driving licence, issued after 1 October 2006. This driving licence may be expired.
- You have not reported to us that your driving licence has been stolen or lost.
- The driving licence is in your possession.
- You are registered with a municipality that offers online renewal.
- In some cases, you may need a Health Declaration Form from the CBR.
- You have the DigiD app and you have added to it an ID check or the ability to log in with an ID or driving licence (with PIN). You will need a smartphone with an NFC reader (Android version 7.0 or higher, iPhone 7 or higher).
If you do not meet one of the requirements or lack the technical means, you will not be able to renew your driving licence online. Please go to the municipality where you are registered.
How to renew your driving licence online
The process of renewing your driving licence online consists of 2 parts. First, have a passport photo taken. Next, proceed to step 4 and renew your licence online.

First, have a passport photo taken at an RDW photographer or approved photo booth. The cost of the passport photo varies depending on the photographer or photo booth. Do not use an older passport photo.

Opting for a photo booth? Bring your driving licence (number). Some photo booths will require you to enter this number.

The photographer or photo booth will send us your passport photo and signature (for your new driving licence) securely and digitally. We will send you an email and/or text message within a couple of minutes, explaining how to renew your driving licence online.

Renew driving licence
Apply for your driving licence using the button ‘Renew driving licence’.

Pay the fee for the driving licence using iDEAL/Wero .

You will receive an email two days after your application informing you that your driving licence is ready.

Please refer to the municipality's website to see if you need to make an appointment to collect your driving licence. Bring your current driving licence. You will have to hand it in.

You will receive a letter from DigiD containing a PIN 5 working days after you collect your driving licence. You can use this code to activate the login functionality of your driving licence. This is optional.
Please note: Pick up your driving licence within 3 months. If you miss this deadline, you will have to reapply.
