Exporting a vehicle

Do you wish to export your vehicle abroad? Or is the vehicle already there? Register it for export. Only then do your obligations in terms of insurance, PTI and road tax end.

Important

  • Ask which documents you need in the country where you are importing the vehicle. Please note! Do not deregister your vehicle in the Netherlands until you know what those documents are.
  • If you are selling the vehicle to someone abroad, make sure the buyer exports the vehicle in their name. Their details will then be included on the export certificate (vehicle registration certificate part II). This means that the buyer is responsible for the vehicle from that point on. If you arrange the export, you will remain responsible for the vehicle until it is registered abroad.
  • If the vehicle only has an Individual Approval Certificate (IGC), and no registration certificate, it is only valid in the country of issue. Another country may decide to accept it, but you will have to check with that country yourself. We have no information about this.

How to export a vehicle

  1. Visit one of our RDW inspection stations, RDW desks or an authorised export company. Would you like your company name to appear on the export certificate (vehicle registration certificate part II)? Once again, your options are an RDW inspection station and an RDW desk.

  2. Please bring the following:

    • Valid ID, driving licence or passport.
    • The vehicle registration card with the registration code or the Certificate of Registered Ownership (Part 1B) and Transfer Certificate. Lost your vehicle registration certificate? Apply for a new one first. You will need this when importing abroad. This is no longer possible after export.
If you are the registered owner, and you deregister the vehicle at an inspection station or desk? You will be able to do this without the registration code or Transfer Certificate.
    • The number plates, you must return them. No number plates? First have plates made by a certified license plate manufacturer.
    • If you would like your company name to appear on the export certificate: a signed extract from the Chamber of Commerce register. This document must be no more than 1 year old. If you are not authorised to sign: a copy of the ID of the person who is authorised. And an authorisation from the authorised signatory.
  3. Pay the fee.

  4. The export company or we will deregister your vehicle for export. From that point on, the vehicle will no longer be in the Dutch vehicle registration database in your name.

  5. You will receive the following documents:

    • A certificate of indemnification. This certifies that the registration has been terminated.
    • The vehicle registration certificate with a corner cut off. Or the Certificate of Registered Ownership Part 1B.
    • The export certificate (vehicle registration certificate part II). You will need this together with the vehicle registration card or the Certificate of Registered Ownership for registration abroad.
  6. Is your vehicle going to a country outside the European Union or EFTA? Be sure to declare the export to Customs.

  7. Take your vehicle abroad. Do you still wish to drive the vehicle in the Netherlands? You can find the applicable rules under Driving the vehicle after submitting the notification.

  8. Consult the Tax and Customs Administration to see whether you can get part of your BPM refunded.
