Importing a vehicle from a European country

Are you purchasing a vehicle in another EU  or EFTA country and would you like to drive it in the Netherlands? Please make an appointment at an RDW inspection station and apply for a Dutch registration number.

Inspection duration: 25 to 55 minutes

Conditions

  • You must be at least 18 years old or 16 years old when importing a moped.
  • You must come to the inspection station yourself. Or an RDW-authorised company will visit you for the inspection, see having someone else conduct the inspection (only available in Dutch).
  • Private individual? You are registered in the Netherlands (BRP) .
  • Legal entity? Your company is based in the Netherlands, registered with the Chamber of Commerce, and is not a sole proprietorship. As an authorised signatory, you do not need to be present at the inspection. You may authorise someone else on a one-off basis (only available in Dutch).

How to apply for a registration number

  1. Please make an appointment at an RDW inspection station and sign in with DigiD or eHerkenning.

  2. Are you travelling to us by the vehicle in question? Apply for a one-day registration number (only available in Dutch) after making your inspection appointment.

  3. Please arrive 15 minutes before the inspection. What to bring to your appointment:

    • Complete original foreign registration certificate. Make a copy for the BPM declaration, if applicable.
    • Valid ID, driving licence, passport or other valid identification (only available in Dutch).
    • Certificate of Correspondence (CoC) , not mandatory. The CO2 value on the CoC determines the amount of the BPM.

Bring the documentation after the inspection? Discuss this at the inspection station; this falls under a control inspection. See the fees.

  4. Would you like us to accept the foreign PTI certificate (exported from an EU or EFTA country) that is still valid? Please indicate this when you report to our reception desk. Bring proof: original PTI certificate, mention on foreign registration certificate or sticker on foreign number plate.

  5. We identify the vehicle and assess the documents. Everything in order? We will transfer the data to the Dutch vehicle registration register.

  6. Please submit a BPM declaration with the Tax and Customs Administration if your vehicle is subject to the BPM obligation.

  7. Once approved by us and the Tax and Customs Administration we will send you a new vehicle registration certificate within 5 business days. Two business days later, we will send you a letter with a complete registration code . When you will receive the documents depends on the postal service.
  8. Insure your vehicle for third-party liability (WA). You will automatically receive a bill for motor vehicle tax from the Tax and Customs Administration if this applies to your vehicle. See What to take care of.

  9. Find an authorised manufacturer for making number plates. Make sure you have the registration certificate with you.
