Requesting a transition licence number
If you are transporting a vehicle that is not registered in the Netherlands (no Dutch registration number) to a foreign country via the Netherlands, you will need a temporary registration number. This means requesting transit registration (transit plates). A person who does not live in the Netherlands can also apply for a transit registration certificate.
How to get a transit registration certificate

Make an inspection appointment with DigiD
Make an inspection appointment at an RDW inspection station. Request a one-day registration certificate (only available in Dutch) if you are driving to the appointment. If you do not live in the Netherlands, please provide a Dutch address – for example, the address of the company that is arranging transportation from the Netherlands for you.

Bring the following: valid ID, driving licence, passport or other valid identification (only available in Dutch).

Please bring the documents required for your vehicle.
- Vehicle previously registered in an EU/EFTA country?
Foreign registration certificate (we will collect this) and foreign periodic technical inspection report (if your vehicle is subject to PTI obligation)- Vehicle previously registered outside the EU/EFTA?
Foreign registration certificate (we will collect it) and for vehicles with a date of first registration after December 1997:
a Certificate of Correspondence (CoC) and
a Manufacturer’s Declaration of Conformity (MDoC or BFAB card) or an Individual Approval Certificate (IAC)

Pay the fee at the inspection station.

We will review the documents. If the vehicle does not have a valid periodic technical inspection report from another EU country, please add the PTI inspection when making your appointment. we will also check the vehicle for a number of PTI requirements (only if the vehicle is subject to the PTI obligation). An additional fee applies to the PTI inspection.

If your vehicle is approved before 12:00 PM, we will send you the registration certificate the same day. After 12:00 PM? we will send it the next business day. When you will receive the registration certificate depends on the postal service. You can also arrange with the inspection station to pick up the registration certificate.

Have number plates made by an approved number plate manufacturer. Find an authorised number plate manufacturer. Bring the transit registration certificate for this purpose.
After the application
The transit registration is valid for 14 days (from the date the registration number is issued). The registration number is valid in any country. You can also register the car abroad with the registration certificate.
