Suspending a vehicle

If you do not use your vehicle for a long period of time, you can have its registration suspended. The vehicle may not be parked or driven on public roads. You are exempt from motor vehicle tax as well as third-party liability insurance (WA) and PTI.

About the suspension

  • The suspension takes effect immediately. It is not possible to choose a future date.
  • You can arrange the suspension online or at a vehicle registration counter, an RDW desk or inspection station. You can also arrange a suspension for someone else.
  • A car can be suspended for 1, 2 or 3 years. After 3 years, it will expire automatically.
  • You can shorten the suspension period by ending the suspension yourself. For example: you want to suspend your car for 7 months. Choose a 1-year suspension. After 7 months, you end the suspension. You will not receive a refund.
  • If you converted a suspended vehicle, such as a van or camper, the suspension will be extended automatically. You will not have to file for a new suspension.
  • The suspension will end automatically when you transfer the vehicle.
  • If you cancel the suspension within a month after the start of the suspension, you are required to pay motor vehicle tax over that period. The Tax and Customs Administration will send you a supplementary assessment.

Conditions

  • You are 18 years of age or older. Or at least 16 years old if you are suspending a moped.
  • If the vehicle registration is in a company’s name: you are registered with the Chamber of Commerce. Was that registration terminated? Transfer the vehicle to another company or a private individual first.
  • The owner of the vehicle must not have passed away. If they have, you will have to transfer the vehicle first. Learn more at Inheriting a vehicle.
