Terminating a vehicle registration

Is your vehicle no longer on public roads because you are going to use it for, for example, the cross, for education or as a museum piece? Then you can end the registration of that vehicle in our vehicle register. In that case, you do not pay motor vehicle tax, you do not need third-party liability insurance (WA) and you do not need to comply with the PTI obligation (Periodical Technical Inspection).

Is your vehicle abroad, has it been scrapped or do you want to scrap it?
Then read the information about export or scrapping (only available in Dutch). In those cases, you must follow other steps to end the registration of your vehicle.

Conditions

You can only deregister the vehicle if you will use it for one of the following purposes:

Your business. To carry out business activities on your business premises.
Cross. Only for a car, motorcycle or moped.
Education. For example, at a driving school or fire service.
A museum that is not used for private purposes. The museum must be registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KVK).

How to deregister a vehicle

Click 'Deregister a vehicle that will no longer be used on public roads' (only available in Dutch) and include the following documents with your application:
- Motorsport: a licence issued by the Dutch National Autosport Federation (NAF), the Royal Dutch Motorcyclists Association (KNMV) or Motorsport Organisatie Nederland (MON). KNMV and MON licences can only be used for motorcycles.
- Education: a statement or letter from the driving school, educational institution or fire service.
- Museum: an application on the museum's official letterhead.
Deregister a vehicle that will no longer be on public roads
Will you use the vehicle for motorsport or for your company? And is the vehicle not registered in your name or your company's name? Include a copy of the valid vehicle registration certificate with your application. If you do not have the certificate, provide the owner's details instead.
If we need more information, we will contact you by phone or email within 10 working days.
If everything is in order, we will send you a letter within 10 working days informing you whether your application has been approved. When you receive the letter depends on postal delivery times.

Once the vehicle is no longer registered in your name, it no longer needs to be insured. If applicable, the periodical technical inspection (PTI) requirement also no longer applies. Do you still use the vehicle on private premises? If so, it may be advisable to keep third-party liability (WA) insurance for the vehicle.
