    Resident in the Netherlands before 1 February 2020

    Through your municipality, you request us to exchange your UK driving licence. For more information, go to ‘Can I exchange a foreign driving licence’. You have until 1 May 2021 to exchange your UK driving licence. You must therefore submit your exchange request to your municipality by 1 May 2021. This is under the same conditions as before the Brexit date. 

    Driving on public roads

    You can still drive in the Netherlands with your valid UK driving licence until 1 May 2021. For more information, go to ‘Driving with a foreign driving licence’. Are you a professional driver? If so, there are different rules. Read more under 'Information for professional drivers'.

    Resident in the Netherlands after 1 February 2020

    Did you come to live in the Netherlands after 1 February 2020? If so, you can exchange your UK driving licence for a Dutch licence. Under the rules of the European Union, this is permitted until 1 January 2021. If you apply to exchange your driving licence after 31 December 2020, other conditions apply. The conditions are available on the page ‘Can I exchange a foreign driving licence’.

    Driving on public roads

    What happens if you do not exchange your driving licence by 1 January 2021? Or was your UK driving licence issued before you came to live in the Netherlands? If so, you can drive in the Netherlands with it for 185 days from the date when you became resident in the Netherlands. For more information, go to ‘Driving with a foreign driving licence’.

    Scenario A
    Situation:You have been living in the Netherlands since 1 April 2020.Consequences: From 1 January 2021, you cannot drive in the Netherlands with your UK driving licence.

    Scenario B
    Situation: You have been living in the Netherlands since 1 November 2020.
    Consequences: You can drive in the Netherlands with your valid UK driving licence until 1 May 2021.

    You are a professional driver

    Are you a professional driver and do you have a qualification card (code 95) from the UK? At the moment, it is not entirely clear whether it will be possible to add your qualification card (code 95) from the UK to your Dutch driving licence. The Ministry and RDW are currently studying the agreement. Once we have more clarity, we will let you know.
