Extended validity of driving licences issued by non-EU countries
Because
of the measures taken in response to the coronavirus, it is not always possible
to obtain a Dutch driving licence, even though driving licences issued outside
the EU may only be used for 185 days. For this reason, the Minister of
Infrastructure and Water Management has ruled that you may continue to drive
with your non-EU driving licence beyond the 185-day period.
Following conditions
After the end of the 185-day period, you may continue to drive with your non-Dutch driving licence until 31 May. However, this is subject to the following conditions:
- you have a valid driving licence issued by your country of origin;
- the 185-day period ended after 16 March or is due to do so before 1 June.
In some cases, a driving licence from outside the EU may be exchanged for a Dutch drivinglicence. In other cases, you will have to take a theory and practical exam with the CBR (Central Office for Motor Vehicle Driver Testing).
