Selling a vehicle that has had its registration suspended

When selling a vehicle that has had its registration suspended, you do not need to do anything. As soon as the buyer has had ownership of the vehicle transferred over to their name, the suspension of registration will lapse.

Logging in with DigiD

If you want to terminate a suspension of registration online, you need DigiD to log in. If you do not have DigiD, you can get it free of charge at this link opens in a new windowwww.digid.nl.

Terminating a suspension of registration online

  1. Go to this link opens in a new windowTerminating a suspension of registration. This will take you to the DigiD screen, where you can log in.
  2. Provide the requested details in DigiD and then you will be taken to the RDW service.
  3. Specify which suspension you wish to terminate.
  4. You will receive an email regarding your request.
  5. You will then receive a second email providing confirmation and specifying an end date for the suspension. The suspension will then be terminated with immediate effect.
  6. As soon as the suspension has been cancelled, you may drive the vehicle on public roads again. The vehicle must be insured and have passed its APK roadworthiness test. Motor vehicle tax becomes payable again automatically.

APK roadworthiness testing before the termination of the suspension of registration

For more information about having an APK roadworthiness test during the suspension period, go to Having an APK roadworthiness test during the suspension period.

Paper registration certificate mentioning the suspension of registration

If you have a paper registration certificate that mentions the suspension of registration, you will receive a new registration certificate in credit card format and a registration code. This mention will appear on the paper registration number allocation document (part IB) if you suspended registration or extended a suspension before 1 January 2014. The RDW sends the registration code one working day after the registration certificate.

The RDW does not send the registration certificate and registration code to other countries, but to the last known address in the Netherlands or an address for correspondence in the Netherlands.

Registration certificate in credit card format

You will not receive a new registration certificate if you have one in credit card format (registration card).

Driving without a vehicle registration card

If you have been issued a registration card but have not yet received it, you can still drive in the Netherlands. The Dutch police can search the national vehicle licence register to find your details. You must be able to show the vehicle registration card 14 days after the end of the suspension of registration. You cannot drive your vehicle abroad without a registration certificate.

Terminating a suspension of registration under the collectors’ scheme

If you participate in the collectors’ scheme for suspending the registration of vehicles of 15 years of age or older, you may have to pay for a subsequent suspension of registration or extension of a suspension. This is the case if you no longer have five paid suspensions due to the termination of that suspension. This is because you can suspend a registration free of charge only if you have five paid suspensions for vehicles of 15 years of age and older per year.

Terminating the suspension of registration of vehicles registered in the name of a company

If the vehicle is registered in the name of your company, you can still terminate the suspension of registration online. For more information, go to Suspending the registration of a company vehicle’.

Terminating a suspension of registration within 1 month

If you terminate the suspension of registration within 1 month of its start date, you will still have to pay motor vehicle tax for the period in which the registration certificate was suspended. In such cases, the tax administration will send you a tax adjustment notice.

Having the suspension of registration terminated by someone else

If you are unable to terminate the suspension of registration yourself, someone else can do it for you. This is only possible if you have a registration card. If you have a paper registration certificate, you will have to arrange this at a help desk.

To have the suspension of registration terminated by someone else:

  1. The person who is terminating the suspension of registration on your behalf must go to this link opens in a new windowTerminating a suspension of registration and then log in using their own DigiD.
  2. This will take them to the RDW service.
  3. When asked ‘Do you own the vehicle?’, they must select: No.
  4. In order to arrange for the suspension, they will need your registration card document number and the corresponding registration number allocation code.
  5. They select the vehicle for which the suspension of registration is to be terminated.
  6. The RDW will send confirmation of the request to the specified email address.
  7. The suspension will be terminated as soon as a second email from the RDW specifying the end date arrives at that email address.

You will receive a new registration number allocation code by post. Your registration certificate remains valid.

The person requesting the suspension for you must be at least 18 years of age (16 in the case of scooters/mopeds).

Owner has died

If the owner of a vehicle that has had its registration suspended dies, it is not possible for the suspension to be terminated prematurely. The suspension will lapse automatically at the end of the chosen period of suspension. The heirs of the deceased owner will then be responsible for complying with the vehicle obligations (third-party liability insurance, motor vehicle tax and – if applicable – APK roadworthiness testing). The registration can only be suspended again once the vehicle has been registered in the name of another owner.

The suspension will also lapse if, for example, ownership of the vehicle is transferred to the partner or an heir or someone else and is registered in their name.

Not possible to carry out procedure online

If you are unable to cancel a suspension of registration online, you can also go to a vehicle registration help desk or RDW customer service point. For more information about this, go to Terminating a suspension of registration via a RDW desk.
