On board computers for taxis

All taxis in the Netherlands must be equipped with an on-board computer (Dutch BCT). The relevant regulatory act came into force on 1 October 2011. The regulations specify that all taxi operators must purchase an on-board computer and have it installed and activated before 1 February 2015. From 1 April 2015 updated specifications have been published that shall be implemented on all taxis before 1 July 2016.

Type-approval of on-board computers for taxis

On-board computers in taxis must have a type-approval and must comply with the requirements for (software) security. RDW is responsible for the type-approval and inspects whether the on-board computer complies with all the specified requirements.

Technical departments with a RDW Designation

The Specifications regulation (in Dutch)   states that the on-board computer must be tested. It is up to the manufacturer to determine which technical department is deployed to test the on-board computer for taxis. The technical department must have a RDW Designation and must conduct the prescribed tests in accordance with the ISO 17025 standard.
